I really want to know if there is a alternate route when there is a war in the Middle East. I say hello to the new members from Holland Roger
Dear Dr. Kazi, Some conditions need to be met, before any commitment regarding the commencement date can be made. Here are a few examples: - a minimum of 150 pilots (and their support teams) need to have signed up (expect cancellations). As of today, we have 130. - ALL slots in our Org Structure (http://www.it-careernet.com/rally2000/org_1.htm) need to be filled. - that team needs to work out a water tight and implementable project- and financial plan, together with binding quotations from reputable vendors. Contingency plans need to ensure that we can and will deliver, irrespectively. - financing must be secured To facilitate the above, please use the Project Forum (http://www.wst.nu/RALLYFORUM/index.htm) to input any information pertinent to organizing this magnificent event. Kind regards Roger Krieger PS: How about sending us a list of hotels along the route in your country? dr hamid kazi Dear Roger Please advise us the proposed datewise route so try and get the necessary permissions from director general of civil aviation government of India and also to get more persons involved with our event please try to make the route including all clubs helping us get the best benefit for promotion of the event and their club also please advise proposed plan for india soon hope to get maximum coverage in media and press along with lot of aviation experts helping us in this event wishing all the best and you may advise me if u need any help in India with best regards Happy Flying Make the world small by flying around the world in the next rally drkazi John Davis Sean, I think your web sit is great. Despite having earned my PPL wings on Cherokee's in the early 80's (though flown extensively with my late dad during the mid-60's and mid-70's), I haven't flown since mid 80's. I have now just earned (this week, in fact!) my MPL wings under the watchful eyes of Springbok (South African) Aviators Andy Kaspersen & Steve Roe. When Steve mentioned yesterday that "by-the-way, there a Marco Polo Rally" on the offer, they had to "hold me back" 'cause I was ready to leave there and then! After "calming down", I began visualising all the opportunities that could present themselves on this rally. Education was the first thing that came to my mind. Hence, I plan to take my 12 year old son as a flying crew member, and using Internet and Satelite Technology, send daily reports and "clips" back to his classmates for the best "world geography" lesson he'll every receive! Notwithstanding, this has got to be the greatest challenge ever to present itself in terms of bringing an awareness (of many things/issues) to the (generally) ignorant land-lubbers. Man, what a way to do it! Look forward to eventually meeting all the lads (and lassies). Baden Hall, South Africa. Zoltan Ovari Congratulations ! How can I help / contribute? I am a nonactive german/hungarian microlight pilot residing in Hungary. First and last flying experience in1989/90 my flight from Donaueschingen (Germany) to Adelaide (Australia)(ca 300 h) by a trike along the same route somone suggested over Turkey/Syria/Jordan in the ME and then as in the rally shedule until Chittagong. The only technical problem occured with low fuel quality in Myanmar/Burma. The navigation based on 1:1000000 maps (as Brian Milton suggested) and VHF communication was even in that time without GPS no problem. Mounting a transponder on the aicraft was technically easy but not a real help (in Karachi even leaded to a landing on the "old airfield" just parallel to the real one). Since travelling alone, without ground team, for the longer sea distance from Indonesia to Australia, my trike was equipped with a one-man life raft (4,5 kg). On the rally route the longest sea distance as far as I understand is Muscat-Gwadar, is there any rescue plan in case of emergency? This leads to the next question, how will the ground team travel? In Hungary we have a company operating (Czeh made?) L-410 turboprop aircraft, they supported twice the organisators of the Paris-Dakar rally. Is there any interest to contact them ? Are there any pilots from Hungary interested? We have some pilots who participated in short rallys in Tunesia and Maroco. What would be appr. the cost of participation for a pilot? Good luck, see You at the start! Charl Starke To all South African pilots: Come guys lets do this thing!! Roger Krieger This is in response to inquiries of late: Event Schedule: ----------------------- Before we can make any commitments regarding the commencement date of the Marco Polo Rally, we need at least 150 flyers singed up (having to expect cancellations) and one lead sponsor. One renouned, international airline informed me that they require an 18 month lead time per se before funds could be made available. Since we are targeting a few, but major multinational corporations, we need to incorporate this time scale in our planning. I have done quite a bit of research in this regard and plan to launch a sponsorship marketing campaign in March/April of this year. This takes budget cycles and the nature of the decision making processes of our sponsors into regard. Outline of Priorities ---------------------------- We need to prepare for this campaign, as soon as possible, and must coordinate our efforts: 1) Marketing Collateral Pending further materials from our printers, I can provide you with graphic files which you can utilize for your temporary stationary. Tonic Design of South Africa is currently also designing additional artwork and sponsorship marketing event collateral. You may also use any materials from our website, with limitations applying to graphics and Knowlege Base data. As long as the information is unaltered and the URL, as well as our our email address, is included in your redistribted publication of our materials, we don't have any intellectual property and copyright infringement concerns. 2) Watertight Event Concept Importantly this includes a solid budget, a very detailed project plan, and a quantified potential media, press and TV exposure report. Although it is impossible to finalize planning at this stage - particularly prior to sponsorship financing - our event strategy must be convincing and implementable based on our research results. 3) Qualification of potential sponsors to approach in March/April 2002 The annual financial reports of most blue chip corporations publish the contact details of their CEO's and those executives responsible for sponsorship on their Websites, including their business strategy and short to medium-term business outlook. We need to interview board members as well as research their annual financial reports to match the potential sponsors' interests with what our Olympian Rally Event offers in terms of brand-building and market exposure. Please also see the sponsorship categories published on our Website. Please thus research the following: Names and contact details of potential sponsor's CEO, CMO, CFO, and sponsorship department, if they have one (in that order of priority) Find out if one of them is a pilot, aviation enthusiast, or avid sportsman (and which discipline if not aviation) Who they sponsored (event organizers plus contact details of the sponsored entities' decision makers), and what amounts in US $. An international sporting event and air rally must fit into their marketing and branding strategy. We also need to know about their medium to long term marketing strategies. Apart from your personal contacts, their corporate Website -> annual financial reports - are usually an excellent research resource. 4) Sponsorship Marketing and Fund Raising Entities We must primarily endeavor to leverage our capabilities by engaging an internationally acclaimed PR agency as well as key sponsorship solicitation professionals for Europe, America, Africa, and SEA. Qualified candidates would be considered for the function of "Vice President, Sponsorship Sales - Europe / America / Africa / SEA" They would earn a commission in the amount of 1% of sponsorship funds directly related to their solicitations, where such funds should equal, or exceed $2M per sponsor. Former top tier managers, with proven strong industry contacts, as well as individuals with substantial experience in fund raising should apply. Roger Krieger We had two new pilot online registrations from Portugal yesterday. Due to a software glitch these messages were unfortunately lost. Could you please sign-up online again? I apologize for the inconvenience caused! Roger Krieger PS: In general, our virus scanner automatically removes any suspect emails before they reach our inbox. Thus, if you do not see you name appear in the pilots list 12-24 hours after you have signed up, please contact us at rally[at]it-careernet.com and resend your registration. Ian

Forward from Tormod Veiby 2001-10-23 John, Regarding your inquiry about a list of Ultralight / Microlight models which meet the criteria of the JAA/FAI definition, please find the first input I received from the FAI. I added the URL's for your convenience. Best regards Roger Krieger Please join our mailing list at http://www.topica.com/lists/RALLY2000/ *** Roger, That is lately a VERY long list. I doubt if anyone has the complete status (i.e. including prototypes, one-offs a.s.o.). Consult the latest issue of Directory of Leisure Aviation/Flugel der Welt for a start. Best regards Tormod Veiby President of C.I.M.A. - The International Microlight Aviation Commission of F.A.I. The respective links are:
http://www.widola.com/start.htm John Harlow 2001-10-22 Roger, Since I am new to ultralites all I was interested in is a representative example of what would qualify, not a comprehensive list. I own a single seat Chalenger but not sure if it fits the requirment. As I read the spec it seems the total weight including pilot, fuel, equipment, etc can not exceed approx 600 lbs and the stall speed no greater than 35 knts. Is this a correct assessment? I am trying to put my arms around what this project requires and how extensive of a diet I need to go on. -) Thanks for your patience John
Roger Krieger 2001-10-18 Dear John, Thank you very much for your inquiry. I realize that the definition of aircraft is not readily found on our Site. Please see http://www.wst.nu/rally2000/definition.htm (....) There are no limitations regarding instruments. Could you please help us make queries like yours public by posting your messages to http://www.wst.nu/rally2000/guestlog.htm and our Mailing List: http://www.topica.com/lists/RALLY2000/ ? Thank you again for your inquiry and I sincerely hope to welcome to on board soon! Roger Krieger
John H Roger, I am from Florida and have some interest in the rally as a pilot. Can you supply a list of UL's that meet the requirments? I own a single seat Challanger which I think meets the wt requirment but exceeds the speed. Also what equipment is required to be on board? With the lead time remaining there is plenty of time to build a plane which I may be willing to do but I just don't know where to start to put my arms around the size of this task. Thanks John
Roger Krieger 2001-10-17 Dear Silva, Thank you very much for your email. Regarding the questions of potential participants, I have attempted to be as specific as possible on the Website: www.it-careernet.com/rally2000. Some issues, however, necessarily must remain vague at this juncture to ensure some flexibility when planning is finalized. Now to answer your questions: ... how much to participate? ... what support can be expected? Current plans are to offer participants either highly subsidized or fully complementary race services in terms of hotel accommodations, food and beverage and fuel along the route. will be made to address participant payment systems needs enroute as well. Professional timing and communication services will be in place. The event will be properly insured and secured by companies with international reputations for high quality services. Ground and air crews will be professionally outfitted including medical personnel. ...what's the longest overwater/uninhabited terrain leg? Rhodes to Cyprus and crossing Golf of Oman approx. 470 Km ... ultralight airplane specs., especially the max fuel one could carry while meeting the reqs. (obviously) Participating aircraft need to comply with the European Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) / FAI definition of a microlight (http://www.wst.nu/rally2000/definition.htm). No max. fuel carrying requirements at this stage. ... etc. etc. I hope I have managed to answer your questions to some degree of satisfaction and suggest that we discuss details on the phone?
Best regards Capt Sivaraman 2001-10-17 Hello, I received your info on the proposed aerial adventure by microlight/ultralight flying machines from Paris to Beijing. While I am interested in the same, many questions have to be asked and answered...how much to participate?...what support can be expected?...what,s the longest overwater/uninhabited terrain leg?..etc. etc.Put me down to participate when all these Q's can be answered! I might like to add that I am very familiar with the areas you propose to operate over and could volunteer to assist with planning.I have taken part in several long distance air rallies notably one from Paris to Singapore(when we had to fly four times over the legs),albeit using standard category aircraft. The ultralight experience could be a new one and exciting one. I would also need some detailed info on the ultralight airplane specs.,especially the max fuel one could carry while meeting the reqs.(obviously) Do keep me posted!! Best wishes, Siva
Roger Krieger 2001-09-22 Mike, Thank you very much for your compliments on the Website. I am still not quite happy with the way the information is structured, and would like to add some more photos too. If you, or anyone out there could help me out, I'd be utterly grateful. In general, all comments and suggestions regarding both the Website and the organization of the Rally are most welcome. As appealing as a Caribbean Island hopping event is, the sheer magnitude of the Marco Polo Rally currently prevents me from investing any notable resources in other ventures. However, if you plan to organize a rally in the US, I would be more than happy to assist you within my powers. Please phone me at the Rally Office, if you would like to discuss this matter. 2001-09-21 Great Website. Have you considered organizing something is the US or along the Carribean Islands from Ft. Lauderdale? If so - let us know. We know plenty who would be interested! THANKS
Omar Contreras I am one of two latinamerican pilots, how want to participate on this rally, we need more information: of when the rally begins (date), how many days you are spect to spend, and wish are the requirements. Best Regards Omar and Luis Alfonso, Venezuela and Colombian lagultralight[at]epm.net.co Dirk Niederwipper 1/14/01 3:05:36 PM I really looking forward to see this Ralley. I'm happy that we still have such adventures in our modern life! Best regards to the organizer of these ralley! Dirk Niederwipper
